During the high-level forum, Well will present on “Ionikylation: Safe and Sustainable Alkylation Technology”.
Increasing global demand for high-quality gasoline is driven by increased use of high-performance engines and regulatory factors. The production of octane-boosting blending stocks, such as alkylate, is a common approach to meet this demand. However, acid-based alkylation systems that use toxic and hazardous HF or H2SO4 pose serious operational risks to plant personnel and nearby communities, while driving up costs of safety for refiners.
Well Resources’ Ionikylation technology is a novel and commercial alkylation process that utilizes a proprietary non-aqueous composite ionic liquid (CIL) catalyst. In contrast to acid-based alkylation systems, the non-hazardous and non-corrosive nature of the CIL catalyst allows Ionikylation to provide a safe operation and economic benefits to refiners. All Ionikylation process equipment is manufactured using carbon steel and the system is operated at moderate operating conditions.
Ionikylation was first commercialized in 2013 in a 100,000 metric-tpy installation. Since then, nearly one dozen units have been licensed, having processing capacities between 50,000 to 300,000 metric-tpy. Notably, PetroChina and Sinopec have successfully commissioned 4 new Ionikylation units, and additional units are scheduled to be commissioned from 2020-2022. Ionikylation is the safe and sustainable alkylation technology of the future.
