Well Resources' VP Pitches Canadian Crude to Chinese Refiners

Dr. Keng Chung delivers a keynote highlighting cooperation between Canada and China to support energy security and cleaner refining innovation.
Calgary, AB, January 9, 2026 – As China kicks off its 15th Five-Year Plan, Well Resources' VP of Technology, Dr. Keng Chung, delivered a keynote address urging Chinese refiners to expand imports of Canadian heavy crude at the Special Forum on High-End Chemicals, New Materials, Pharmaceuticals, and New Energy Industry Chains in Dongying City, Shandong, China.
Dongying City is located at the heart of China’s petrochemical industry, with Shandong Province accounting for nearly one-seventh of the nation’s total oil processing capacity, making it a strategic hub for refining and energy investment.
In his address, Dr. Chung pitched the strategic value of Canadian heavy crude to Chinese energy leaders, emphasizing the importance of joint cooperation to strengthen energy security while advancing environmental performance. The keynote was delivered alongside high-level bilateral meetings between Canadian and Chinese delegations aimed at deepening trade relations and industrial collaboration.
Dr. Chung called on Chinese refiners to:
1) adopt next-generation technologies that prevent CO₂ emissions from entering the supply chain,
2) reduce environmental waste generated through refining operations, and
3) unlock new value-added carbon materials from heavy crude feedstocks.
Together, these measures form a compelling business case for increasing Canadian and other heavy crude shipments to the world’s largest oil importer.
Recent technology advancements, including Well Resources’ SELEX-Asp technology, have enabled petroleum refiners to access new markets for ultra-heavy fractions by producing the valuable precursors for non-combustion end-use products, including waterproofing additives and filtration media.
SELEX-Asp is a commercial decarbonization technology that operates under the principles of supercritical fluid extraction and fractionation. SELEX-Asp is most commonly used for the clean and targeted removal of asphaltenes from petroleum resid. The technology has recently expanded into advanced applications such as needle coke production. Well Resources is the global licensor of SELEX-Asp.
