Warren Chung, P.Eng.


Mr. Chung is responsible for providing the leadership and management required to execute Well's strategic initiatives and growth plan. He serves as a liaison between Well and its strategic partners, and is heavily involved in the international promotion and licensing of Well's innovative technologies.

Mr. Chung holds a Bachelor of Science with distinction in chemical biomedical engineering from the University of Alberta. He has extensive experience in performing economic evaluations of oil and gas assets across the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, as well as in the United States and New Zealand. His work has supported both public and private companies through audits, acquisitions, divestitures, and IPOs. Mr. Chung also has experience in engineering design and construction management, having previously been involved in projects ranging from upgrader expansions to industrial and residential utility servicing.

Dr. Chung has a broad perspective and background on petroleum operations. He is a Senior Refinery Advisor (State Specially Recruited Expert) for the government of China and is actively involved in the development of sustainable technologies. He is a co-inventor of the SELEX-Asp process.


Dr. Chung was born in Malaysia and is fluent in English, Mandarin, four Chinese dialects, and Malay. He is a chemical engineering graduate from Queen’s University with both Bachelor and Master of Science degrees. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary, as late Dr. Roger Butler’s first doctoral student, specializing in the Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) process using horizontal wells, and he is a registered professional engineer in Alberta.


Dr. Chung has received several achievement awards, including the Alberta Science and Technology (ASTech) Leadership Award for his contributions to the heavy oil industry. In recent years, Dr. Chung was honored as a Fellow by Engineers Canada, a Fellow by the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and an Honorary Fellow by Geoscientists Canada.


Dr. Chung has more than 40 years of working relationships with several Chinese research institutes and is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chair Professor at the Guangdong Food and Drug Vocational College, and Visiting Professor at the China University of Petroleum and Guangdong University of Petrochemical Technology.


He has also served as a member of the Technical Advisory Council of the China State Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil Processing. Dr. Chung has published more than 300 papers in refereed journals, 120 company reports, and he holds 21 patents. He has supervised more than 50 post-doctorate fellows who now hold senior positions at universities and oil companies around the world.
